A new milestone has just been reached for the Laté28 project at L’Envol des Pionniers, which plans to build a non-flying life-sized replica of the legendary Laté28, considered by many to be the first modern passenger aircraft. On Monday October 21st, seven students from the Mechanical Engineering and Production IUT program at Paul Sabatier III University, accompanied by two of their professors, went to L’Envol des Pionniers to complete a 3D scan of the Renault engine displayed in the hall, which is very close to the one used by the Laté28. Based on these high-tech measurements, a 3D model of the engine will be made and will then be used by students from the IUT program and the modelling section of the Jean Dupuy High School in Tarbes to reproduce, with not yet defined materials, the engine on a scale of 1. The replica will be partially visible once the engine cover has been removed. In its final version, a small electric engine, installed inside the rebuilt engine, will enable the propellors of the Laté28 to turn.
At the same time, high school students from Jean Dupuy are working on a 1:5 scale model of the Laté28, with a 4-meter wingspan and a longitudinal section exposing the internal structure of the aircraft. The model can be transported and will be displayed at different events.
